●● 熱き思い 90年代から活躍するコメディアンヌの中でも飛びぬけた存在でリーダー格だったモニーク。スパイク・リーの「The Original Kings of Comedy (2000)」を受けて、コメディアンヌを集めて作った2001年の「The Queens of Comedy」がその証拠。
そして何と言っても忘れられないのがBETアワードの司会でのビヨンセを真似たダンスのパフォーマンスです。まだ歴史の浅いBETアワードをあそこまで大きくしたのは彼女の力もある。BETアワードの伝説となりました。
女優としてはコメディアンヌとしてコメディ映画が多いですが、私はダニー・グローバーとウーピー・ゴールドバーグの「カラー・パープル」コンビが再共演した「Good Fences / 日本未公開 (2003) (TV)」での好演が忘れられません。ちょっとクレイジーな主役の2人を脅かす普通の人。今までとは違ったコミカルながらもドラマチックな役柄を見事に演じていました。そして「Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire / プレシャス (2009)」。彼女の歴史だけでなく、黒人女優の歴史となる作品となりました。 |
●● バイオ 1967年にメリーランド州のボルチモア近くの小さな町で生まれ、4人兄弟の末っ子として育った。父はドラック中毒者のカウンセラーで母はエンジニア。高校も地元に通い、大学は地元メリーランドにあるモーガン・ステイト大学に通う（卒業はしていない）。その後、テレクラにて働くようになり、電話相手をしていたが、お客との会話のモニターの仕事もしていた。
20代になり、兄のスティーブが地元ボルチモアのコメディクラブの素人が飛び入りで参加出来るアマチュア・ナイトに出るように勧められ、初舞台でスタンディングオベーションを経験し、スタンダップコメディに魅了されてその道に進む事を決心した。
電話会社に務めながら、コメディの道を追求。その頃には人気のTV番組「Showtime at the Apollo」や当時は社会現象ともなった「Def Comedy Jam」やBETのロングラン番組「 Comic View」に出演し、着実に知名度をあげていった。
1999年に転機が訪れる。シンガーのブランディが主演の人気シットコム「Moesha」からのスピンオフで「The Parkers」が始まる。ブランディ扮するモエーシャの親友キムの母親がモニーク演じるニッキーだった。母と娘がサンタモニカ大学に通うシットコムで、モエーシャと共に人気となり2004年までシリーズは続いた。このシリーズでNAACPのイメージアワードも4年獲得し、モニークの人気は一気に全国区へ。
2001年にはスパイク・リーが監督した男性コメディアンのスタンダップライブの映像「The Original Kings of Comedy (2000)」を受けて、女性コメディアンを集めた「The Queens of Comedy」を成功させる。2002年には以前ゲスト出演していた「Showtime at the Apollo」の司会に抜擢される。
2003年にはBETアワードの司会に抜擢され、今現在で3回も司会を務めているのは彼女だけである。
しかし「The Parkers」が終わった2004年からはTVシットコムやシリーズのゲスト出演、コメディ映画に出演、リアリティ番組の司会等していたが、下火を迎える。
2009年には「Shadowboxer / サイレンサー (2006)」で一緒に仕事をしたリー・ダニエルズ監督の「Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire / プレシャス (2009)」に出演。娘に性的・精神的に虐待を加える残虐な母親を演じて観客からも批評家からも高い評価を得て、数々の賞を受賞している。また同年からBETにてトークショーの「The Mo'Nique Show」も始まり、こちらも好評を得ている。 |
