●● レビュー Hail to the King Forest！スコットランド人のニコラス（ジェームズ・マカヴォイ）は、医学部を卒業したばかりで、進路を決めかねていて、地球儀でたまたま指が止まったウガンダにて医者として尽くす事を決めた。すぐにウガンダの僻地に渡り、メリット夫妻の小さな診療所の手助けをする事になった。町に大統領のイディ・アミン（フォレスト・ウィッテカー）がスピーチに訪れ、ウガンダの民衆達が感動と興奮する姿を見て、ニコラスもすぐにアミンの魅力に取り憑かれた。その帰り道、手に怪我をしたアミンの手当てをしたニコラスはアミンに気に入られ、その瞬間からアミンとは離れられない運命になってくのだが... この映画のニコラスという人物は架空の人物。この人物は、ジャイルズ・フォーデンの原作が元になっている。しかし、人食い大統領と呼ばれたイディ・アミンは存在し、残虐な歴史も存在した。架空と事実という全く違う物が、映画では上手くミックスされている。アミンは残虐な行為をしていたのも事実だが、ウガンダの人々をアミンの魅力的なスピーチで夢中にさせたのも事実。そこにニコラスという架空の人物が加わる事で、イディ・アミンの魅力的な姿と残虐な姿の両方が浮き彫りになる。さらには、ウガンダの人々や海外からの人々の、アミンの本質を見抜く前まで、恐ろしくも魅了されている姿も再現されている。興味があって熱中している間は、周りが見えない恐ろしい状態。それは、当時のウガンダだけでなく、今日の世界中のあらゆる国に当てはめられる気がした。そして、事実である「エンテベのハイジャック」事件等を映画に取り入れた事で、一層に映画の緊張感が増したのも興味深い。 その実在した人食いアミンを演じているフォレスト・ウィッテカーの素晴らしい姿に魅了される。アミンの雄弁者としての魅力、人として人懐っこい子供のような性格、そして悪魔のような残虐で強欲な男。2時間という映画の中に全てが上手く凝縮されている。ラストシーンの飛行機を見つめる目。徐々に勢力を失っていくイディ・アミンの姿を凝縮しているかのような目であった。 架空の人物によって、事実という重苦しいドラマを一層にスリリングにし、映画という娯楽に上手くまとめられ、イディ・アミンを演じたフォレスト・ウィッテカーの演技に一喜一憂し魅了される。「映画」という可能性を十分に発揮している作品だ。 (Reviewed >> 1/20/07：劇場にて観賞) |
