ムーア人のオセロ（ローレンス・フィッシュバーン）は、サイプラス島を任されていた優秀な将軍だった。妻となったデズデモーナ（イレーヌ・ジャコブ）を心から愛していた。オセロの旗手であるイアーゴー（ケネス・ブラナー）は、キャシオに先に昇進されたのを不満に感じていた。嫉妬に満ちたイアーゴーの策略により、オセロは悲劇を迎える...

気品と自信に満ちたオセロを演じられる俳優は、そう多くない。誰もが一番先に思い出せるのが、名優ポール・ロブソンである。あの自信に満ちた声と、気品漂う振る舞いは、オセロそのものだった。ポール・ロブソンが舞台で演じたオセロが映像に残っていたら...とても悔やまれる事である。現代のオセロと言ったら、やっぱりローレンス・フィッシュバーンが一番近いと思う。気品という部分で多少不安に感じたりもしたが、さすがに技術のある俳優だけに素晴らしいオセロを見せてくれた。気品にもうもう一つ、色気みたいのを感じた。色気を感じたのは、この映画の演出にも頼る所が多いかもしれない。
この物語にはオセロのほかにイアーゴーというキャラクターが要になる。それを演じたのが、ケネス・ブラナー。現代シェイクスピアには彼の存在を避けては成り立たない程。それ位にシェイクスピアに精通した俳優であるので、イアーゴーを人間らしく演じている。ただデズデモーナに魅力を感じる事が出来なかった。誠実さはあったのだけど、女性としての魅力と将軍の妻という自信に少し欠けていたように思える。
映画という事で、海岸のシーンなどは美しさと強さがより生まれたようにも見える。

ラストを少し変えたり、削除したシーンもあるものの、ほぼ原作に忠実に作られている。オセロの気品さは、俳優のもつ個性豊かな表現により、それも忠実に甦っている。そして映画独特の世界観がより映像を美しくしている。

ウィリアム・シェークスピアの4大悲劇の一作である「オセロー」の映画化。もちろん幾度も映画化されているが、黒人俳優がオセローを演じた初めての映画である。オセローを演じたのが、ローレンス・フィッシュバーン。舞台では、ポール・ロブソンが演じている事でも有名。
