主演のポール・ウィンフィールドとシシリー・タイソンが、ダブルでアカデミー賞の主演にノミネートされた作品。大恐慌時のルイジアナが舞台。2人の子供を演じたケビン・フックスは、映画「野獣戦争」等で知られる俳優ロバート・フックスの実の息子であり、今現在は、主に「パッセンジャー57」等で監督として活動中である。そのケビン・フックスの弟も、この弟役でこの映画に出演している。出演もしているタジ・マハールの音楽が印象的。

ポール・ウィンフィールドとシシリー・タイソン、ケビン・フックスのトリオで後に「A Hero Ain't Nothin' But a Sandwich / 日本未公開 (1978)」に出演している。

さらに2003年にディズニーでこの作品はリメイクされ、その作品ではケビン・フックスが監督し、ポール・ウィンフィールドがゲスト出演している。惜しくもその作品がポール・ウィンフィールドの遺作となった。
